A day after she committed suicide while chatting on webcam, Shobhna Surti's husband Swapnil Surve (28) and his parents were booked by the police on Thursday for dowry harassment and dowry death. The police have launched a manhunt for them.
On Wednesday it was reported that 26-year-old Shobhna had taken the extreme step while chatting with her boyfriend.
On Thursday, however, the police said that Swapnil allegedly had a secret marriage with Shobhna in March. Since it was without the consent or knowledge of their parents, they continued to live separately. Later, a formal wedding was planned in April, but it was called off after Shobhna's parents failed to meet the dowry demand of Rs 25 lakh. The couple fought over the matter on Wednesday night and Swapnil allegedly threatened to remarry unless the dowry was paid.
Shobhna's father, Manohar Surti, in his complaint to the police stated that Swapnil's parents were demanding dowry. "Shobhna tried to convince Swapnil that her family would not be able to arrange for such a big amount," said Inspector Vijay Khaire of Juhu police station.
The couple had frequent fights over the issue. Senthil Kumar, a neighbour, told the police that on Tuesday, Swapnil arrived in the evening at her Nehru Nagar residence and they fought over the issue.
The next day, around 7.30 pm, Shobhna called Swapnil and threatened to commit suicide. She switched on her webcam and told him to watch. Police suspect she may have tried to scare Swapnil. "She took a stole and hung herself by a rod next to the ceiling. She repeatedly said, 'Look, I am going to commit suicide'," a police officer said.
"We sent her laptop to the forensic department to find if the webcam had recorded the incident and the conversation between Swapnil and the deceased," said Khaire.
Advani has met Gadkari thrice this month, including on Thursday night just before the latter left for Nagpur, a person familiar with the matter told ET. The meetings have come as a surprise to many since Advani had spearheaded the campaign for denying Gadkari a second term following allegations of irregularities in his firms.
The outreach on Advani's part is aimed at amplifying his differences with party chief Rajnath Singh, said a senior leader, who did not wish to be named. When Singh went to meet Advani with the list of his new team, he is understood to have told him that if he had come to consult him it was okay but if it was an exercise to complete the formality of showing him the list it was pointless, the source said.
While Advani held his grouse with the party president, Gadkari too had his reasons to be unhappy with Singh in the past on the ground that he was not being consulted on party matters.
Advani has been sending signals of his displeasure with Singh's style of functioning. Advani's proposal to appoint Gadkari as head of the campaign committee for assembly elections, which he is likely to place before Singh soon, is being seen as a shrewd move as Modi would not be interested in heading a panel merely for state polls.
The party was considering forming a campaign committee for the Lok Sabha polls after the assembly elections. Advani is likely to cite debacles in recent state elections to justify his suggestion on formation of an election management committee for assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand later this year.
Advani has been critical of the party's handling of the affairs in Karnataka and said that it would have been surprising if the party had won in the southern state.
When Narendra Modi, during his visit to Delhi met Nitin Gadkari, he told the former party chief that he should play a more proactive role in the party. With his RSS affiliation, Gadkari is seen as someone who can mobilise the Sangh cadre.
President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday expressed concern over repeated disruptions in parliament and state legislatures.
Addressing members of the Himachal Pradesh assembly at its Golden Jubilee celebrations, Mukherjee appealed to leaders of political parties to discuss and find a solution to this problem.
"Every legislator has got his job after begging people for their votes, and after gaining their trust. It would not be fair if he does not discharge his responsibilities," he said.
"The cardinal principle of effective functioning of a parliamentary system is that the majority would rule and the minority would oppose, expose and if possible, depose.
"But this should be done within the framework of rules framed by the legislatures themselves," he said.
The president said the role and functions of an assembly can be described as three D's - debate, dissent and decision.
"A fourth 'D', that is 'disruption', should be strictly avoided," he said. "Disruption has no role in a parliamentary democracy. It is a small minority forcing their will on all others.
"Neither are they doing their job nor letting others do theirs," the president said, while voicing confidence that the Indian political system was capable of finding a solution to the problem.
